Exec on the value of strong role models

Successful industry professionals are built on robust foundations established by their mentors, as Josie Milanetti of Canadian Mortgages Inc. can attest to.

“As I worked through my career, I was inspired by these great bosses, be it male or female, that I’ve had in my lifetime that believed in me and that helped me to become a leader,” the director of underwriting told Canadian Mortgage Professional.

Milanetti said that her sources of inspiration have evolved as her career has progressed.

“When I first started in this career – or in any career that I was going to be getting into – my inspiration to being a leader or to being at the top of my game were my parents because they came to this country,” Milanetti said.

“I’m a first-generation Canadian. They came to this country to get a better life for themselves and to ensure that their children excelled in life and in work. And they were happy and successful.”

The changes in Milanetti’s perspective were commensurate with the knowledge and experience that she has acquired so far.

“As I worked through my career, I was inspired by these great bosses, be it male or female … [who] believed in me, and that helped me to become a leader,” Milanetti said. “Also, my junior team, the people that I helped grow in their positions.”

Still, the closest bonds continue to be Milanetti’s most important sources of strength.

“Right now in my life, where I am today or where I am in my career, my biggest inspirations are my daughters,” Milanetti said. “I have two daughters and I want to be a role model for them. So I believe that by working hard, by taking on responsibilities, and by showing them my own work ethic and my desire to be a leader… that gives me the ability to be the best mom and the best leader for my daughters. So that they will aspire to be the best that they can possibly be.”
