Calgary housing project receives $22-million endowment

A new affordable housing project in Calgary will benefit from a combined government investment exceeding $22 million, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

The funding will go towards the redevelopment of the YW Sheriff King Home site from 44 to 80 beds, and the construction of new affordable housing in Inglewood, situated near downtown Calgary.

The project will see the construction of a new affordable housing facility that can accommodate up to 100 residents. The project will specifically focus on the needs of women and children fleeing violence, CMHC said.

The development will incorporate “a trauma-informed design that promotes calm, safety, comfort, dignity, empowerment, health, and healing,” CMHC said. “Shelter residents will enjoy similar spaces as the affordable housing residents as well as licensed childcare for children living in the shelter, a communal kitchen, laundry facilities, and a pet room.”

The YWCA will be owning and operating both components of the project, CMHC added.

“These new homes, alongside new emergency shelter beds funded by our partners, will be life-saving and life-changing for women and children fleeing abuse,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “With one in five Calgary families in need of safe, supportive and affordable housing, this funding is a critical investment towards addressing urgent demands.”
