New six-storey housing complex to bolster region's supply

Major federal boost for New Brunswick housing announced

Federal and provincial authorities have announced a substantial $16 million investment in fresh housing supply for New Brunswick.

The development of the six-storey, 47-unit apartment building at 7 Wellington Row in Saint John’s downtown core is currently underway.

Of these units, more than half will be offered at rates geared to the average incomes of non-elderly singles and persons with disabilities, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

“Three of the one-bedroom units will be fully accessible, and the whole building is designed to the universal design standard including common areas and apartment suites,” CMHC said. “The Wellington will be one of the first apartment complexes constructed to the Passive House design standard in Atlantic Canada. It will significantly reduce the building’s ecological footprint and require little energy for heating and cooling.”

“Saint John, like many communities across the country, is facing a housing crisis,” Mayor Donna Noade said. “All levels of government must work together to create solutions for this challenge. The Wellington aligns with Saint John’s Affordable Housing Action Plan by providing both affordable and market-rate housing.”

Construction is slated for completion by spring 2023.
