Rental, housing issues top of mind for Manitobans ahead of election

At the top of the minds of Manitobans are high rental prices and ineffective housing policies, according to a recent opinion poll conducted by Rentals.ca.

With Manitobans scheduled to cast their votes on October 3, fully 66% of those surveyed by Rentals.ca said that candidates’ rental policies are “very likely” to influence their choice, while 26% indicated they were “somewhat likely.”

Approximately 62% of respondents identified themselves as renters, with an additional 25% saying that they are “actively seeking” rental accommodations.

“Over 78% of participants pointed to high rental prices as the most pressing problem in Manitoba’s current rental market,” Rentals.ca said. “This concern reflects the economic challenges faced by many Manitobans and the urgency for policymakers to address this issue.”

For 66% of survey participants, “it is crucial for elected officials to address the shortfall of rental housing supply in Manitoba,” Rentals.ca added.

And while 30% of respondents said that they are still undecided about which party to vote for – coupled with 13% of respondents saying that they do not intend to vote at all – the New Democratic Party of Manitoba (NDP) has garnered the support of a significant share of respondents (26%), followed by the Progressive Conservatives (21%).

This reflected the results of a poll by Abacus Data earlier this year, which found that support for the Liberal government among Canadians is waning.

Only 16% of respondents in the Abacus Data survey believe that the Liberals are the most qualified economic managers in the current environment, compared to 47% of those leaning towards the opposition Conservatives.
