CIBC just added a board member whose background may be its most strategically timed appointment yet
Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) is adding one of the financial industry's most experienced technology executives to its board of directors, naming Prasanna Gopalakrishnan as a director effective September 1.
The appointment brings the bank more than 30 years of senior leadership in technology, data, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) at a time when digital capability is increasingly central to how Canada's major lenders compete for clients and for brokers.
Gopalakrishnan most recently served as Global Chief Product and AI Officer at ADP, the global human resources and payroll firm, before which she held the role of Group Chief Technology Officer at Sky in London.
She also served as Chief Information Officer of the Retail Bank at Bank of America, following senior technology leadership positions at Fidelity Investments.
Kate Stevenson, Chair of the Board at CIBC, in Toronto, cited the appointment's strategic purpose directly.
"As Prasanna joins our Board, she brings decades of experience in financial services, alongside deep expertise in technology and artificial intelligence," said Stevenson.
"Her knowledge, perspectives and leadership will be an asset as our Board oversees the execution of CIBC's client-focused strategy, particularly as technology, data and AI play a key role in delivering value for stakeholders."
A career built at the intersection of finance and technology
Gopalakrishnan holds a Bachelor of Science from Birla Institute of Technology and Science and a Master of Business Administration from Northeastern University.
Her track record spans retail banking, wealth management, and large consumer-facing businesses, a profile that maps directly onto CIBC's areas of strategic investment.
The bank serves 15 million personal banking, business, public sector and institutional clients across Canada, the United States and internationally.
That investment has already produced measurable results. In June 2025, CIBC won the Digital CX Award for Best Use of AI for Customer Experience from The Digital Banker, recognising its AI-powered voice assistant. The bank also ranked first in customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power Canadian banking study following the launch of its AI-powered Real-Time Experience engine, according to CIBC's Q3 2025 earnings call materials.
CIBC reported a sharp rise in second-quarter profit, driven by a 40% surge in capital markets earnings. The bank is also set to sell its 91.67% stake in CIBC Caribbean to Bermuda-based Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son for approximately US$1.6 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027.
