Bank commits to providing tools needed to protect Australians against scams

ING wants more ‘scambassadors’

ING is rallying Australians to become “scambassadors”, or individuals who educate and inform their friends and family about scams.

Research from the non-major bank has revealed that 46% of Australians have fallen victim to scams and that over half of the Australian population (53%) relies on scambassadors due to their trustworthiness and non-judgmental approach.

Millennials, known for their tech-savviness and confidence in scam identification, are at the forefront of the scambassador movement, with 94% feeling capable of assisting others in scam prevention.

Amid the rising concern over scams, ING said it has taken steps to empower Australians with the tools needed to protect themselves and their loved ones, with the bank releasing a pocket guide on scam prevention, urging individuals to be cautious and informed.

“With scams being so prevalent and with nearly half of Aussies falling for a scam at one point in their lives, having a trusted person to lean on and seek advice from is an important part about being scam safe,” said Brett Dalkeith, head of fraud at ING Australia. “It’s great that we have this group of Australian legends that are helping inform and educate those around them about the latest scams.

“At ING, we believe anyone can be a scambassador once empowered with the right resources and information. We encourage all Aussies – scambassador or not – to stop, reflect and protect yourself from scams by staying up to date with the latest scams, and learn about the protocols to follow if you find yourself a victim.

“We also have resources to help customers avoid scams via the ING website security page and on the ING mobile app. The ACCC’s Scamwatch and ASIC’s Moneysmart websites are also great resources for more information and tips to avoid scams.”
