ING alerts Australians on new email scam

Australians are being warned about a new bank scam, in which an email purporting to be from ING is advertising “highly competitive” term deposit interest rates that are “revolutionising” the way Australians save.

The email comes with an attached six-page page brochure, offering favourable rates of 5.25pa up to 6.1pa on term deposits, from three months to five years. In addition to the rates, the fake brochure includes a letterhead, contact details, terms and conditions, and information on how to open a term deposit. It also features the ING logo and the logo of ASIC and APRA.

The image below shows a couple of pages from the brochure.

ING is encouraging everyone who has received the term deposit scam to delete both the email and the pdf.

“This is a reminder that scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, are targeting multiple industries and are happening more frequently,” a spokesperson from the bank said.

The ING spokesperson is also urging everyone to visit ING.com.au/scams for regular updates on scams and how they can protect themselves.

“Customers can also report scams, including this one,” the spokesperson said. Please call the dedicated ING scams line on 1800 052 743 if you think you have experienced a scam that could impact your ING account OR if you notice any unusual activity on your ING account.

The ING spokesperson also reiterated important advice to bank customers: “Never share your personal banking details with anyone you don’t know or trust.”

ING also warned customers about the fixed term deposit scam on its website.
