Which state has the worst delinquency rate?

Mortgage delinquencies rose nationwide month-over-month in January. But which state saw the highest percentage of homeowners late with their mortgages?

How does your state fare when it comes to delinquent homeowners?

Well, it’s safe to say that a lot of states aren’t doing as well on that score as they have in the past. According to a new report from Black Knight Financial Services, the percentage of delinquent borrowers nationwide spiked last month, up to 5.1% from 4.8% in December.

The report included borrowers who were 30 days or more delinquent on their mortgages. January marked the first time in 11 months that national delinquency rates were above 5%. The good news is that last month’s rate was still a bit lower than January of 2015, when the rate hit 5.5%.

Foreclosure sales were also up, spiking nearly 16% after holiday moratoriums, but active foreclosure inventory continued to decline, dropping 26% from the same time last year.

So which states had the biggest delinquency problems in January? Mississippi earned the dubious honor of the top spot, with 13% of its homeowners delinquent on their mortgage payments, followed by Lousiana and New Jersey. North Dakota, meanwhile, had the fewest delinquencies, with just 2.41% of its homeowners late on their mortgage payments.
