CII introduces CPD scheme

Launched by the CII following extensive consultation, the CPD scheme will apply to all qualified members of the Institute.

It represents the next step in the drive to higher standards and builds on the Institute’s revised Code of Ethics and Conduct which set down the principles which all members should follow in the course of their professional duties.

CII head of CPD Fiona Andrews said: “This new scheme has turned CPD from a reactive recording exercise of knowledge gained into a dynamic personal development support service. This proactive approach will encourage members to identify, plan and undertake activity of direct relevance to their job role, personal development and, importantly, career aspirations.

“This is another important step in our response to the significant pace of change within the industry and our overall drive to support the development of professionals. CPD is underpinned by a range of new tools such as the forthcoming Job Role & Competency Framework and the faculties and societies dedicated to supporting key business segments.”

Based on an easy to use planner, the new CPD scheme is designed to dovetail with the CII’s up and coming job competency framework. For the first time this will enable CII members to benchmark themselves against minimum levels of competence for key job roles, identify gaps and, using the CPD tool’s educational facility, construct a programme of personal development. “The emphasis is on outputs rather than inputs” comments Fiona Andrews.

“This means members are responsible for identifying and satisfying their own learning and development needs – supported by CII standards, tools and services – rather than, for example, merely verifying they have attended a seminar which may not have given them any new knowledge or understanding.”

An online CPD tool is also now available to make the process of identifying, planning and recording development activity an easy and straightforward task. Guidance notes are being issued to all CII qualified members and online CPD facilities are also available.
