British Friendly pays 96.7pc of claims

This exceeds the UK average of 91.1% in 2013 according to ABI figures.

Mark Myers, chief executive of British Friendly, said: “We are the very first insurer to publish their claims numbers for the whole of 2014 and I believe all insurers should publish their data by the end of January.

“The moment of truth with any policy is whether it will pay out when you need it.

“Income Protection does have a very good record of paying out to customers and we are among the best at delivering on this promise.

“Our consistently strong claims record underpins our ethos as a mutual insurer. We exist to benefit our members rather than shareholders."

Of the claims which were refused 19 were due to non-disclosure while nine were due to exclusions applying.

Mark Dennison, principal at adviser LightBlue UK, added: “We are always pleased to see insurers publishing claims data as it helps to show the underlying culture of the company.

“A long-term excellent track record of paying claims is a key criteria in selecting the right products for our clients.”
