NatWest and RBS halt expat mortgage lending

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland have stopped offering expat mortgages.

From 19 May applicants must reside in the UK to be eligible for a mortgage with NatWest and RBS, although brokers have a two week window from today to submit their applications.

NatWest and RBS said the decision was made after looking at the level of demand for products and the cost and complexity of providing them safely.

The change will extend to existing expat customers wanting additional borrowing or a facility increase.

Applications will still be considered from serving members of HM Armed Forces, UK Diplomats or UK Consular staff, following standard residential mortgage criteria. HM Armed Forces consist of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force.

NatWest said its approach to foreign currency mortgages – where applicants are paid in a different currency – will stay the same as long as they reside in the UK.
