Those hoping to become the location for Amazon’s second North American headquarters got a step closer Thursday – at least some did.
The retail behemoth released a shortlist of the twenty metropolitan areas that it has shortlisted from 238 proposals from across the US, Canada and Mexico with the US dominating.
“Thank you to all 238 communities that submitted proposals. Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough – all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity,” said Holly Sullivan, Amazon Public Policy. “Through this process we learned about many new communities across North America that we will consider as locations for future infrastructure investment and job creation.”

The 20 shortlisted areas are:

- Austin, TX
- Boston, MA
- Chicago, IL
- Columbus, OH
- Dallas, TX
- Denver, CO
- Indianapolis, IN
- Los Angeles, CA
- Miami, FL
- Montgomery County, MD
- Nashville, TN
- Newark, NJ
- New York City, NY
- Northern Virginia, VA
- Philadelphia, PA
- Pittsburgh, PA
- Raleigh, NC
- Toronto, ON
- Washington D.C.
Amazon says it will now work with these 20 shortlisted areas to dive deeper into their proposals.
The firm expects to make its final decision this year and has highlighted the importance of HQ2 which will be a planned $5 billion investment employing up to 50,000 people.
