Depending on who you talk to, keeping Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under government control will be either a big money-maker or a big money-loser for the government

    Accounting really isn't that mysterious! Are the GSEs generating revenues over and above their operating costs? What is the actuarial estimate of future losses resulting from existing guarantees? Apply GAAP, not accounting designed to further one political agenda or another. What is the result. One super agency most likely leads to stifling inbred thinking. If the government needs a role in mortgage lending, HUD, the GSEs and other existing programs are sufficient and stronger now as a result of the last decade. Change is NOT always called for or good.
